Using FM files on portable drive

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Hi Mark,

It would appear as if one could use a flash drive to store portfolios and data files if they need to be used between different PC's without internet connection at times.

From what I could gather is that if the MM4 files as well as the DAT files are on the same drive all investments are opened correctly. This looks like the MM4 only gives the path from where it was opened without the path being stored within the MM4 file.

If the same path is thus used on the portable drive than on the PC's would you agree this should work?

Regards.

Hi fundman247,

Yes, this would work. If you also want to store your preferences with your data, use the "portable/cloud" mode:

Also, to make sure all the data is really in the same folder, use "File / File Operations / Set Data Location...".
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the link about portable drives.

Version 10 does not have the set data folder option under File / File Operations / Set Data Location.

Further as I have over 400 DAT files they are stored in 5 folders and even my MM4 files are stored in 3 different folders as per the type of investment. Local/global/funds/indexes etc.

As each PC does already have FM installed it would then be optional to have to install FM on the portable drive?

Regards.

Hi fundman247,

Yes, if each PC has Fund Manager installed, you don't need to install it with your data on the portable drive. However, in this case, each PC will have separate settings (Memorized reports, preferences, etc...).
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

It is fine as I normally only need to view the level of trades and see the gain graph.

The main PC is used to update trades/prices/distrib etc.
