import find/replace

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

I've imported 100 positions and it's a beautiful thing. ;-)

My custom inv. properties didn't make it, tho. Was the format string supposed to say CIP01 etc. instead of the names I gave the fields? I can't figure any other reason and I'd like to know in case I need to do this again.

Can't update these (or most inv. properties?) with a file, I think. So is there *any* way to do mass/global change/update operations? Mousing around this much is hard on some wrists, but it's also slooooooow. (I try to use the keyboard but it's not always possible.) After the learning curve, I know I won't do this as much, but still... not never. Does the pro version make this easier?

Thanks,
Jeanne

Hi Jeanne,

Glad you've made progress.

Yes, when doing the generic transaction import, any custom investment properties need to be specified as CIP01 ... CIP10 no matter what you've renamed their labels in Fund Manager. This CIP01 key goes in the "Input Format" string during the import, not in the data. The data contains the value you want.

The Advisor version has a "Edit / Symbol List..." command that allows you to edit properties based off symbol. When you make an edit here, all investments with that symbol are updated.
Thanks,
Mark

That sounds nice, but would it take a list of symbols to which you want to make a change? I was thinking more like the painful process of changing the internet server for 30 different securities or change the asset type or sector for a large number of different symbols (because you've added some nuance of your own).

You can still only edit one symbol at a time with "Edit / Symbol List...". You can import category information. See "File / Import / Other / Asset/Inv. Goal/Sector...". Press "Help" in that dialog for an explanation of the required file format.
Thanks,
Mark

Oh sorry. I forgot that I had read that page on importing categories with a file. Or I partially remembered it which can be worse. And you are correct that that goes a long way. It would still be nice to be able to change servers or turn off price retrieval or asset type/sector updates. Then there are those custom investment properties.... All of that is still pretty painful.

Admittedly tho, after the setup and learning curve, it won't be nec. all that often for me as an individual investor.

Peace,
Jeanne

Hi Jeanne,

Okay, thanks for the feedback. We may be able to offer a better import that allows you to specify all the investment properties.
Thanks,
Mark
