Unsuccesful back up.

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

I wish to transfer to another computer. I have FM personal version2014.13.5. I have successfully loaded the software and restored the portfolio to the Windows 7 computer. When I close the program, the back up does not occur. I get error messages, access denied for each investment and when I give up it says the back up was unsuccessful. Is it permissions with Windows 7 etc.? It worked fine with the older computer running Vista. What and where do I need to do something?
Thanks.

Hi Rick,

Please go into Fund Manager and select "Options / General Preferences... / Data", and check you backup folder setting. It may be still pointing to a folder on your old computer, like if you changed usernames. Just use the "Browse" button and browse to an existing folder where you'd like to store your backups. The default would be:

My Documents \ Fund Manager \ autoback
Thanks,
Mark

Thanks, Mark. A couple interesting things: First, I do seem to have back up files (.fmb files) in the auto back folder. They are about 4 MB size; I suspect they are true backups? I guess I could try restoring one. The messages I get are access denied, and then it goes thru saying files for each investment can't be backed up to an address on the other computer - these are .dat files. Do I somehow need to change a location for that action?
Thanks,
Rick

Hi Rick,

If you're getting access denied errors saving your investment (*.dat) files, then they are somehow not writable. You can either change their permissions, or you may need to change the location. You can start by using "File / File Operations / Set Data Location..." and setting the data to save in your current:

My Documents \ Fund Manager

folder. That will most likely fix any file permissions issues relating to your investments. If you are also getting access denied errors when doing an autoback, check your specified folder location under "Options / General Preferences... / Data", and make sure you are backing up to a folder where you have write permission, like:

My Documents \ Fund Manager \ autoback
Thanks,
Mark
