Loss of remote drive

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Postby fundman247 » Thu Mar 12, 2015 8:29 am

Hi Mark,
Could you please give ur views.

If I open a portfolio from a remote location and all the .dat files are stored on the remote drive and the remote drive is lost due to a connectivity problem FM would only indicate that the files cannot be saved. All updating is thus lost.

At this point there is no option to cancel the saving and first restoring the remote path.

Please indicate what one can do when this drive is no longer valid.

Regards.

Hi fundman247,

A couple options:

1) Try to fix whatever connectivity issue happened outside Fund Manager, and then do the save.

2) If #1 can't be resolved, you can save your investments to a new location. You can only do this 1 investment at a time though. However, if you made a bunch of changes in a few investments you can select one in the Portfolio Editor, and use "File /Save Investment As..." and save the *.dat file locally.

Also, you may also consider turning on the option to automatically save your investments every so many minutes to avoid this becoming a big problem. See "Options / General Preferences... / Data / Automatic Investment Save".
Thanks,
Mark

Thanks.

If one knew the connection is lost it would be easy to save locally. The problem is when you close FM it is too late if say your internet lost a signal or load shedding as it is now a big problem although if it is load shedding one will normally know there is no power.

The reason why I raise it is I had this problem about 5 times this week. Each time in the morning after I did my daily update and browsing through the prices.

The norm is to cancel the save or closing of the program until saved.

If the Auto save is used one will have to click 3 times for each investment FM tries to save when the drive is no longer available.

Hi fundman247,

I understand. I would probably suggest not using a remote drive in this case, since it seems to not be too reliable.
Thanks,
Mark
