Duplicated investments

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Postby amsadl » Sun Sep 27, 2015 10:38 pm

Since I split my portfolios (refer my post Tue May 12, 2015 11:46 pm), it seems that investments are being automatically replicated somehow, not with any values, but just a sort of stub file. Sounds strange I know, but i can't think of anything I'm doing that is causing this.

I first noticed that some investment files were appearing in the portfolio even though I had removed them previously using 'File / Close Top Investment'. Next time I opened the portfolio they would still be there.

Today I looked in the fund manager folder and found multiple instances of investments, that seem to have been created each time I open Fund Manager. e.g the ANZ investment has additional files named ANZ_1.dat, ANZ_2.dat to ANZ_9.dat

Image of folder attached

Please advise.

Hi amsadl,

A closed investment in Fund Manager is still going to be located on your hard drive. Closing an investment does not delete it from your hard drive. It is just removed from your Fund Manager portfolio. You may have all those files from earlier times using Fund Manager, or some other way they're just not in use currently. You can find which investment files you're currently using by looking at the path and filename. You can add "Location" and "Filename" to fields in the Portfolio Editor window using "View / List Columns...".

Investments should not be automatically replicated. You can try this:

- Count the number of data files in your FM data folder on your hard drive
- Start Fund Manager, open graphs/reports, update prices, or whatever you want.
- Exit Fund Manager, and count the files again. You should have the same number.

The only time you would get more investment files is if you create a new investment. There are many ways to create new investments, such as manually using "New Investment", or retrieving transactions and a transaction for a new investment is found, or using the new portfolio wizard.
Thanks,
Mark

But even though I'm excluding investments from my portfolio (by closing them and saving the portfolio), they are reappearing in the portfolio later on. It's happened again - see attached. All those investments with a 3-5 letter symbol name have been previously excluded. And even though I've deleted the investment files, they still seem to be getting re-created (also see 2nd attached, files with an underscore and number)

Could it be that when importing prices, and if i have the 'create new investments as needed" box ticked, that it is generating these investment files where my price file still has a price for the old investments?

I can't say whether this option has always been ticked, or whether I've inadvertently ticked it recently, but I've always downloaded one set of prices for all my investments, and then imported the same file into my various portfolios, without any problem previously

Hi amsadl,

Yes, if you are importing prices with the "Create New Investments as Needed" option checked, any symbol in your importing price file that doesn't exist in your portfolio will be created and added to your portfolio.
Thanks,
