General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

I downloaded a trial copy of FM this weekend. I am looking for portfolio tracker software to analyze performance in three areas. FM looks pretty close to what I want. Two of the three areas are handled by the user defined Goals and Asset Types which I can attach to each equity.

The third area is where I got the stock tip. I subscribe to several stock newsletters. I would like to label each stock with the newsletter that recommended it, and also to report on that so I can compare the relative performance of each newsletter.

Does FM have a way to do that? Something like "Idea Source"? Is there some user-definable field I could use, or take advantage of some other existing field?

Hi Bob MacBook,

Thanks for trying Fund Manager.

As you've seen there are only 2 "categories", Asset Type and Investment Goal. One idea you could consider is to create another set of sub-portfolios for each newsletter. You can have the same investments placed in multiple sub-portfolios, so you could have the investment located both in your regular account sub-portfolio, and then also in the appropriate newsletter sub-portfolio. It would look something like this:
Code: Select all
- Master Portfolio
   - My Holdings
      - Acct 1
      - Acct 2
      - Acct 3
   - Newsletter ABC
   - Newsletter XYZ

So, if you owned some shares of INTC in Acct 1 and it was recommended by Newsletter ABC, you would have this same investment located in both sub-portfolios. Assuming you retrieved transactions into Acct 1, you could afterwards just copy/paste that investment from Acct 1 to Newsletter ABC. You do this in the Portfolio Editor window. If you have the same investment file located in multiple sub-portfolios, whenever you change it in any one location, it is updated everywhere. It is the same investment, just instantiated in multiple sub-portfolios.
Thanks,
Mark
