Tracking Capital Gains Tax

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Hello everyone,
I'm trying to track my portfolio with Fund Manager personal and I've ran into the first trouble when I tried updating a sale I did last week in the software.

I'm German-based so the government subtracts a 25% tax on all Capital gains, that I might be able to claim back later. Anyways, how do I track this deduction?
The US has a similar deduction (doesn't it?), so I'm hopeful that someone has already thought of this.

So for now I followed what was lined up in this thread http://www.fundmanagersoftware.com/foru ... hlight=tax

I created a distribution category "Abfuhrsteuer" (Capital Gains tax) and filed whatever I had to pay as a distribution there. This kinda forces me to keep the old investments around and is also kinda clumsy to enter. Is there a better way to do all of this at once?

Best Regards,
inde

Hi inde,

As described in that other link you referenced, Fund Manager is generally pre-tax. If you want to track taxes paid, you can do this by recording a negative distribution for the amount of the tax. It sounds like you've already done this. There is no feature that allows you to record a sale, and taxes paid in a single dialog box. You would have to record them separately.

It is usually best to keep your old investments, but just hide them when you no longer own them. This way they are included in historical returns, and any reports you want to run for earlier dates.
Thanks,
Mark

alright, I guess I'll do it that way then, I guess.

What do you mean by hiding an investment? How does that work?

Inde, hiding an investment makes it "invisible", but as Mark said the data is included for historical purposes.

To hide an investment, right click on it, then click on Properties. Click on the Other tab, then check the Hidden attribute. You can click on the Help button to get more information on this feature.
