Sold/closed positions

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Mark, The problem with moving closed positions to an archive portfolio or sub-portfolio is remembering which investment belongs to which subportfolio where two or more subportfolios held and sold the same security. This is a problem since FM does not maintain a db for each security in the master portfolio but rather repeats the same investment in each subportfolio, eg cgmrx.dat, cgmrx1.dat ..........cmgrxn.dat. I have talked with you about this before. CGMRX is CGMRX. Its price and distribution activity are what they are without regard to which or how many subportfolios may hold it.

Unless separate archives are set up for each sub you have a problem is there is a need to open a previously closed investment. Using Advisor I have numerous subportfolios many hold the same security. I really know of now way to do this. Overtime, the db grows and grows.

Hi Mike,

I would recommend "hiding" investments you've sold/closed instead of moving them to another sub-portfolio. Please see:

Mark,

I uderstand hiding closed positions. It still does not address the issue of db growth. Theoretically, at some point the db will occupy the entire hard drive. I also see no way to "Unhide Sold Positions" other than electing to "View Hiddem Investments/Portfolos" which is a universal option.

Hi Mike,

I don't see the size of Fund Manager's data as an issue. The investment and portfolio files are relatively small. Theoretically, any application could fill up your hard drive if you have enough data files.

I do agree that there would be some benefits to storing data differently, such as keeping all common data for a given symbol in a single file. Fund Manager was not designed this way, and changing it to another data format is not trivial, so has to be weighed against the potential benefits.

You can un-hide any investment with either of these methods:

1) Turn off "Investment Properties / Other / Hidden" for any investment.
2) Use "File / File Operations / Hide Sold Investments..." and turn on the option to "Un-Hide Non-Sold Investments".
Thanks,
Mark

Mark,

I understand the db conversion issue. I can live with it.

I know you can hide/unhide selected investments within a subportfolio. The file option is unclear. Hide sold investments is clear. Unhide non-sold investments is not unhiding sold investments unless that is not what you mean. It leaves the question: can you unhide sold investments once you have opted to hide them without doing it subportfolio by subportfolio? That creates the problem of remembering the symbol(s) for sold investments unless a list is provided.

Hi Mike,

When using the "File / File Operations / Hide Sold Investments" dialog you can choose the definition of "sold" by setting the date range. For example, if you set the date range to start at the beginning of your portfolio's inception, and end today, everything will be defined as un-sold. This dialog only considers items "sold" if they owned 0 shares for the entire date range you specify.

If the above doesn't help clarify how that works, please let me know what you are trying to achieve, and I can try to provide some specifics.

An example may help. If you want to do a report on 2007, and include everything you owned at any time during 2007, but still keep items hidden that were only owned prior to 2007 (or only after the end of 2007), you would use these settings:

Start Date: 1/1/07
End Date: 12/31/07
Un-Hide Non-Sold Investments: Checked

This will hide everything that had a zero share balance throughout 2007, but un-hide any investment that ever had a share balance in 2007.
Thanks,
Mark
