help with Alerts

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Alerts are a valuable feature of FM but I'm going around in circles trying to get automatic updating to work.

In Options/General Preferences on the Other tab there is a checkbox for Daily Portfolio Price Alert and a time value.
  • Does this control only portfolio price alerts or also individual security alerts?
  • Are prices updated prior to processing the alert?
  • Are transactions downloaded before processing the alert?
  • Will alerts be processed if FM is not open?
  • What happens if FM is being used at the time when alerts are scheduled?

Help instructions for the Command Line Interface (http://www.fundmanagersoftware.com/help/ui_comline.html) should be updated to show that quotes are required around files specifications because all recent versions of Windows have spaces as part of standard directory names.

I've been trying to get WIndows Vista Task Scheduler to start FM with the /I /Q options. It appears that FM will start and keeps running but prices are not updated. How can I tell what is going wrong?
Best,
Chuck

Hi chucksf,

That option is independent of investment alerts. Press the "Help.." button in that dialog to read more about this feature. No, prices are not necessarily updated prior to sending the portfolio price alert. You can set your global price retrieve settings to retrieve periodically if you'd like. No, transactions are not downloaded prior to sending the portfolio price alert. No, alerts can only be processed when FM is running. It can be hidden in the tray, but it has to be running. The price alert is sent in the background, so will not interfere if you are using it at that time.

Thanks for the feedback on that documentation, we'll look into updating this.

Try typing your command line into a command window, and watch Fund Manager.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Chucksf,

The command line documentation has been updated to use more current default locations and demonstrates the use of double quotes better. Thanks for the feedback.
Thanks,
Mark
