Theoretical Portfolio

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Postby dipsea » Wed May 02, 2012 6:24 pm

I'm evaluating this software. My apologies for asking something basic - so far I've missed what I'm looking for in the help and tutorials.

I'd like to create a theoretical portfolio consisting of a number of mutual funds, each representing a certain dollar percentage of the portfolio, and then test its performance over various time periods. I understand how to create and add investments to a portfolio, and how to retrieve historical prices.

I'm not sure how to set the initial dollar percentage each investment represents within the portfolio.

Thank you for any assistance.

Hi dipsea,

With Fund Manager you must enter purchase amounts, you can't directly enter transactions as a percentage of a portfolio's value. So, if you have a $10,000 portfolio with 10 stocks each of 10% of the portfolio, enter a purchase of $1,000 in each stock. You would need to figure out the appropriate number of shares to purchase for the $1,000 based on the market price. To help with this, you can create the investments with 0 shares initially, retrieve prices, and then enter the transactions, so the share price will be filled in for you when you go to record the buy transactions.
Thanks,
Mark
