Asset Type Information is Lost

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Postby Juergen » Mon Jan 07, 2013 4:35 pm

After upgrading to Version 12 , I seem to have lost all custom info regarding asset types of stocks.
Unfortunately, I did not save anything to a separate file ahead of the upgrade.

So... when the next upgrade comes along, what should I do in preparation so this info does not bite the dust?
Thanks.

Hi Juergen,

This is not normal. As long as you do not uninstall your old version, all your preferences should remain when upgrading. Did you maybe uninstall 11 before installing 12?

When you say the "Asset Type" information is lost, are you meaning the label names, as under "Options / Category Labels..."? If so, you can do a restore from a backup created before you lost these names. When you do a restore, only restore the global registry preferences. FM makes automatic backups for you. See "Options / General Preferences... / Data" for frequency and location information.
Thanks,
Mark

Mark,
Thank you for the reply.
I really cannot reconstruct what I did right before the upgrade. Thinking back, I believe I started V12 after upgrade from Win 7 to Win 8. I guess at that time, there was no longer a version 11 around.
I will attempt to get the info from a backup.
In the future, I will put all the asset type info in a CSV file and then load it when required.

(What I am after is to track e.g. GE as 40% Financial and 60% Industrial, then to have this info displaced in a pie of the portfolio).

Hi Juergen,

The investment files (*.dat) remember which category they are assigned to, and in what percentage. The actual category names are stored in the registry. As long as you still have your investment files okay, the %'s should still be assigned correctly. You would just want to update the category labels.
Thanks,
Mark

Mark,
I checked... and all my percentages are actually still there.
As you say, all that is required to re-enter the proper names and I am good to go.
Thanks for the help.

You really know this system.
Great to have you around.
