Read only access

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Hi,

I would like to grant view only access to a second user for reporting purposes.
The Full Access user and the Reporting user don't need to be connected at the same time to the FM files.
If FM is locally installed and portfolio data is shared over the LAN,

Is it possible to implement just with file access permission management?
What files has to be restricted?

There is any other way to implement?

Thanks,

Flijfi

Hi Flijfi,

It should be possible to do this by restricting file access, but that can be tricky. You would need to set the file permissions on all the investment (*.dat) files and the portfolio (*.mm4) file.

Possibly an easier method would be to just make a copy for the 2nd user. If you do a "File / Backup..." and provide this backup file to the 2nd user, they can restore and use their own local copy.

There is also an automatic backup feature, so you could set it such that your main user automatically backs up each time they exit FM, and the read only user could restore from the last automatic backup, or whichever one you want. This way you don't have to manually do a "File / Backup...". For the automatic backup settings see "Options / General Preferences... / Data".
Thanks,
Mark

Mark,

Thanks!
I will try the backup/restore method it will be easier than maintain the permissions on each DAT file.
