Unhiding Hidden Investments

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Mark,

There seems to be an issue with unhiding sold investments. I view it as a bug, but you might see it as a suggestion.

I've run FILE OPERATIONS/HIDE SOLD INVESTMENTS with a date range 12/31/10 to 3/31/11. I have an investment which had 0 shares 12/31/10, then bought and sold shares on the same day in Jan 2011. It therefore has 0 shares on 3/31/11 (and as of the end of day every day in the date range). I've got "UnHide Non-Sold Investments" checked. This one stays hidden, I guess because you are looking at end of day balances. I think this investment should be un-hidden since it did have a balance/activity during the period --just not end of day.

Now that I think about it, I guess something that paid a dividend received after the position was sold out could also stay hidden (and I think it should un-hide). Maybe you need an additional option to cover "any transaction" during the selected period in addition to looking at end of day balances.

Hi Elliot,

You are right, that the algorithm is only looking for a non-zero end of day share balance. In the example you give below it will incorrectly be considered "sold". This was not the intention, so it is a bug and will be fixed for the next release.

Thanks for the idea on "any transaction". That can be something to consider for a future update.
Thanks,
Mark

Mark,

Something else to consider when you fix this.

I "hid" sold investments early last week. On Thursday, I made a new purchase of a previously sold investment (didn't realize it was a previous investment). I imported transactions and reconciled this morning. I couldn't find the investment in the portfolio I bought it in yet the reconciliation was clean. Took me a while to figure out that the new purchase was in the hidden investment.

I think if any new transaction takes place in a hidden investment, it should automatically unhide the investment. Otherwise you pretty much have to re-run the hide routine every day you import data.

Hi Elliot,

Good idea, thanks. Maybe on the import dialogs we could add a new option to un-hide any investment that ends up with a non-zero share balance and had a transaction imported. I'll have to think about this. I don't want to have too many options. Maybe it needs to be just a global option

Besides using "Hidden" investments, if you are mostly only using Reports, you can also utilize the option:

Options / Report Preferences... / General / Do Not Display Investments With Zero Share Balance

BTW, that initial bug you reported is fixed in v11 already.
Thanks,
Mark
