I have purchased a new computer to replace the one I use for FM. How do I transfer the program and data to my new computer?

Yes, you're right, those instructions do assume the same path exists on the old/new computers. I'll update this to improve these instructions.

I'm also trying to switch to a new computer. I believe my data/portfolio files are in the FM folder in the program directory, but i don't know if there are any strays hanging out somewhere else. Is there a way to check to see if there are any stray files hanging out there? Also what if user name is changed how can you work around that? Thanks

Create yourself a Custom report with the field "Path and filename". Sort your report by this field, from the top level "Sort" menu, and you can see any investments with a different path from here. If the username has changed, you would choose the option to restore to a specific folder, instead of the original location. Choose your new "My Documents \ Fund Manager" folder to restore to.

If you choose a specific location ie: Documents/Fund Manager will it place all files to that location? What happens if there are duplicate filenames that are being used but are in different folders. Such as the same stock in different portfolios.

In this case you can't restore from a backup like this. To correct it, save all your investments on your old computer to the same folder, giving each investment a unique filename, and then create your backup. To save an investment under a new location and filename, select it in the Portfolio Editor window, and choose "File / Save Investment As...".
Thanks . Your custom report suggestion is very helpful. I've run the report and have a few stragglems. I'll then export the report to Excel so I can move thenm around to see if there are any duplicate filenames. Will then move everything into a single directory.

I was able to transfer this afternoon. Now checking to see if everything made it. Had some duplicate files I had to clean up and your Path and Filename report wasvery helpful. Hopefully, I'll end up with all my files in the same folder. Thanks fro your help. Jim

I am using the same file path on both computers. The only addition I had was to do the File/Backup and Restore for each portfolio.

Thanks, good point. In general I believe most new users only have 1 portfolio file. I realize users of older versions had multiple portfolio files, but since the introduction of sub-portfolios it usually works best to only have a single portfolio file (*.mm4) and use multiple sub-portfolios. You can definitely still use Fund Manager with multiple portfolio files if you prefer that method.
I have read the posts and followed the guidelines for transfer to my new computer (going from Windows 7 to Windows 8 ).
I am using FM 9.7 and saved a backup fmb file. I copied this file to the Fund Manager folder on the new computer, then performed the Restore. I specified the folder to restore and successfully completed the process. However, upon closing FM, I get the error - "unable to access the fmb file for writing". When I try to open FM again, I get a series of data errors ("MyWritePrivateProfileString failed with error 2/error 6/error 0...") before the program opens in an unregistered state. When I use the repair install option, the portfolio opens in a registered FM program. When closing, the same errors repeat.
