Hi jnewton,

Yes, you can copy/paste sub-portfolios across portfolio files. I'm curious why you would want to do this though? If you want to separate a sub-portfolio, just create a separate sub-portfolio hierarchy for it in your one portfolio file. It is usually best to just have a single portfolio file. It makes managing and updating your data easier.

For a tutorial on combining multiple portfolio files into one, see:

What you're describing would be similar, but opposite.
Thanks,
Mark

I want to separate several personal portfolio from a group of managed portfolios. Managed portfolios could be accessed by others, personal portfolio to be accessed by me. I understand it would entail dual updates etc.

Just trying to think it through.

Another way to do it would be to have a Master file (mine) with all info, and a sub file or slave that has limited info. So is there a way to save a group of specific sub-portfolios into a separate file?

Hi jnewton,

You can create as much hierarchy as you need. So, if you have some information that you want to separate out, create another layer of sub-portfolio hierarchy, like this:

Code: Select all
- Master Portfolio
  - Managed Portfolios
    - Client 1
      - Acct A
      - Acct B
    - Client 2
    - etc...
  - Personal Portfolios
    - Acct 1
    - Acct 2
    - etc

Then, you can report on any level in this hierarchy, and only have 1 portfolio file to manage.
Thanks,
Mark

Thanks Mark.
We are going in similiar directions. I think I want to be able to manage the file as a master file, but be able to copy sub-portfolios for others to view/manipulate either on another computer or under another user name. They might get a file weekly or monthly that has their specific sub-portfolio on it thet they can load, view, and update.
So how would you save a specific sub-portfolio to its own separate file? does the "Save Portfolio As ...." Command refer to specific portfoliosor only to the Master Portfolio?

Hi jnewton,

The "Save Portfolio As..." re-saves the whole set of all sub-portfolios open at the time. To save just one sub-portfolio, do this:

1) Select the sub-portfolio in the Portfolio Editor, and choose "Edit / Copy".
2) Close everything using "File / Close Portfolio".
3) Use "Edit / Paste" to paste the previous sub-portfolio into a new/empty Master Portfolio.
4) Use "File / Save Portfolio As..." to save this new portfolio file.
Thanks,
Mark

That new file can then be copied and given to the client. refreshed on a timely basis.
I think this what I'm looking for. Thanks Jim
