General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Postby HKTrader88 » Fri Jan 27, 2012 2:21 am

Hi, I'm considering purchasing the Professional or Advisor software, but have a few questions that I could not resolve from the trial software
1. Can the software monitor bonds - when I add New Investment, it simply goes to Yahoo website which doesn't appear to list many non-US bonds. I have tried entering the ISIN number but this doesn't seem to do anything, example: Isin: USG24524AE37 is a Country Garden Bond which I would like to track - prices available on TRAC, or Bloomberg.
2. Can the software be set to enter tax rates on dividends, for example, I am taxed 30% on US dividends, can I set this up automatically. If not, then can I extract the full dividend automatically and then manually change it myself.
3. Does the software calculate an NAV/share. So if I start the fund with $10m, can I call this 10,000 shares at NAV/share=$100. Then as I add funds and investments to the portfolio it can amend the value of the basis, and calculate NAV correctly.
4. Does it track FX trades.
5. If I have assets in multiple currencies, can I view a portfolio in each currency showing just those assets in that currency - or do I have to set up new portfolios to do this.
6. Can the software connect to Bloomberg for pricing

thank you!

Hi HKTrader88,

Thanks for trying Fund Manager.

1) Yes, you can track bonds. The "Lookup..." button on the "New Investment" dialog does go to Yahoo, but that doesn't mean you have to use Yahoo for your price updates. For US bonds, FINRA is a good server. If you know the symbol is available on Bloomberg, just use the Bloomberg symbol, and under "Investment Properties... / Internet Retrieve" set it to use Bloomberg for the quote server. Also, if you are retrieving transactions from your broker, the prices will be updated from the broker as well. For links to all the quote servers you can use, see:

http://www.fundmanagersoftware.com/intrtv.html

You can visit these servers with your browser to determine if they have the quotes you need, and what the symbols are.

2) No, Fund Manager doesn't really deal with tax rates. Everything is pretty much pre-tax. I didn't understand what you wanted to change? You can edit any of your transactions (including distributions) to be whatever you want.

3) I assume you are looking to get an effective NAV for a whole sub-portfolio? If so, you can get this in graphical format, under "Graphs / Portfolio/Investment(s) Overlay / Price + Distribution". This plots a hypothetical price plus distribution line for your selected sub-portfolio. For details on how this works, see the online help for this graph type:

http://www.fundmanagersoftware.com/help ... tovly.html

4) Yes, you can track FX trades. Just record them like regular investments, but in the appropriate currency that you buy/track them in. For a tutorial on tracking investments in multiple currencies, please watch this:

http://www.fundmanagersoftware.com/tuto ... video.html

5) You can run a "Portfolio Value" report, and either "List By" currency, or you can "List By" Investment, and filter out to only show a certain currency. See the Report Settings dialog for these options for a Portfolio Value type of report.

6) Yes, prices can be retrieved that are available on the Bloomberg website. It is one of our supported servers. See the link in answer #1.
Thanks,
Mark
