Basic Investments Quantities Limits

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Postby cybercord » Fri Sep 07, 2012 10:56 am

I am looking at buying the product to replace the old SW I used in the past. (MS Money) I realize that the limits are 500 investments. But is that active or a combination of closed (sold) and active investments?

I have 3 accounts with a total of 80-120 active investments at any one time, but hundreds of inactive investments. And over time that will grow.

Thanks for the help.

Hi cybercord,

The Personal version is limited to 500 total investments. This means any "open" investment counts towards this limit. Typically when you've sold all your shares in an investment, you still leave it open in Fund Manager so you have a historical record. You can "hide" sold investments so you don't see them normally. Hidden investments can be displayed at any time you want (View / Hidden Investments), and they are always still included in overall portfolio figures, like historical returns, etc.

You can "close" an investment, but then that investment is no longer included in any calculations or available for viewing. A closed investment would not count towards your 500 investment limit. The investment data file is still on your hard drive, so you could re-open it at a later time if necessary.

With the Professional version you can have up to 2,000 investments open at a time. The limit for the Advisor version is 50,000.
Thanks,
Mark

Mark FM give you some kind of warning when you get close to the 500 limit? Using windows Explorer I realize I already have 236 investment.dat files and don't think any of them are really unnecessary.

Hi lite1,

No, it doesn't, until you actually hit 500 and try to create a new investment. You can right mouse click on your top-most sub-portfolio and look at the properties of that sub-portfolio. It will show you how many total investments you have open.
Thanks,
Mark

Very helpful; easier than my using Windows Explorer and more accurate.
