I am a new user and I like the way that the software allows me to view my asset allocation in each of my accounts as well as in all of my accounts aggregated. My question is whether there is a way that I can have a single asset categorized differently for different purposes. I have an overall allocation for US stocks, and I am able to track that for individual accounts as well as for all accounts by have them all part of the same Master Portfolio. But I also want an allocation among different sectors within US stocks that I would like to be able to see. Is there a way that I can categorize something as a US stock for my major asset allocation, and then create a way that I can also categorize all of my US stocks and view them that way, labeling one an Industrial, another a financial, etc?
Hi Yankees,
Not really... The category labels (Asset Type and Investment Goal) are not hierarchical. You could do something by naming the categories in a sort of hierarchical manner, but there wouldn't be an option to group multiple categories together. For example, you could name your asset types: US Stock - Financials US Stock - Industrial etc... You wouldn't have an option though of seeing a total for all the asset types beginning with "US Stock". The other option you could consider is to group your investments into other sub-portfolios. You can have hierarchical portfolios, and have as many as you want. So, you could do something like this:
So, if you had some investment located in the "Acct 1" sub-portfolio, it could also be located under "Holdings by Sector / US Stocks / Financial". You can have the same investment located in multiple sub-portfolios. It would be up to you to place the investments in the desired sub-portfolios. If you make an edit to an investment in any sub-portfolio, those changes are reflected in all sub-portfolios holding that investment. With this, you can create as much hierarchy as you want, and get totals at each level in the hierarchy. The downside is this approach requires more manual maintenance, as far as keeping investments in multiple sub-portfolios. If you're retrieving transactions into your "Acct" sub-portfolios, and you buy something new, you'd have to remember to place a copy over in the desired sector sub-portfolio.
