Missing data

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Postby JBaumgart » Sat Mar 02, 2013 11:21 am

Have been using FM for many years but I just ran into a strange problem. When accessing any of my investments and portfolios I am all of a sudden finding that all of the data (including prices, dividends, buys and sells) that I had entered since November of 2009 is missing! Every one of them cuts off in the middle of that month even though I've been religiously entering updated transactions and pricing ever since. The last time I used FM (middle of February) everything worked as usual. Any ideas what might have caused this, and will I have to go back and enter all of my transactions for the past 3+ years to restore the missing information?

Thanks for any ideas!

Hi JBaumgart,

I'm not sure. Did you change FM versions, or install any new version of Windows?

One possibility is if you were maybe saving your data under the "Program Files" folder, it could have been virtualized, and if you changed UAC settings in Windows you may be looking at the original location now. Do you know where your investment files are being stored? See "Location" in the Portfolio Editor list view. Use "View / List Columns..." to turn on this field.

You can also look at your automatic backups, and try restoring from one. See "Options / General Preferences... / Data" to see where you're storing any automatic backups. To restore one, use "File / Restore...". You can look at the date modified of the *.FMB backup file for help figuring out which one to restore. When restoring, verify that the "original location" is not in your Program Files folder anywhere. You don't want to store data under that folder.
Thanks,
Mark
