Portable/Cloud mode

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Postby John Lea » Fri Oct 23, 2015 5:20 am

I want to access the portfolio from two computers. I discovered the portable/cloud mode and tried to follow the directions. I installed the program to a Fund Manager folder on the cloud drive but when I tried to access it from the second computer it said that it can’t find two files and they must be in the same location as the executable file. As far as I can see, they were.

I read the help file and see that the example talks about the cloud being mapped as a drive. I don’t think mine is. It just shows up as One Drive or Google Drive with no drive letter. Fund Manager was in One Drive. Does this matter?

I also wonder if it makes sense to uninstall all of the FM files on both computers and start again.

As I have probably demonstrated, I confuse easily.

Thanks.

Hi John,

What files/paths were listed as missing? If you look on the 2nd computer, where you're running from, do you see them? The OneDrive folder that usually gets added to your top level "Favorites" is really a shortcut to the location:

C:\Users\<username>\OneDrive

You should see all your files in there. It may be that some of them didn't sync to your 2nd computer?
Thanks,
Mark

Thanks Mark.

The files were iteng14x.dll and fmsprt.dll. I tried a few times and am no longer sure which is the second computer. I will uninstall all on each and start again this time keeping track.

Google drive isn't working for me. I installed FM on that drive on PC1. Google Drive said my pw was wrong on PC2. I changed the pw on PC2 and took the pw to PC1. Google Drive n PC1 said it was wrong. I likely don't understand how clouds work.

I uninstalled all and reinstalled on OneDrive on PC1. All in a Fund Manage folder. When I tried to run from within that folder on PC2, I got the missing file errors. I have not reinstalled FM on PC2 but am clicking on FM.exe in the cloud folder. The "missing" files are in that same folder.

Maybe I should stick with the program on one PC. The exercise will do me good.

Hi John,

I assume you've followed these instructions:

https://www.fundmanagersoftware.com/help/portable.html

One potential problem is if you use some shortcut to start Fund Manager that isn't pointing to the cloud drive. Try just double clicking on the FM.exe in the cloud drive to start it from there. You should see a "fmprefs.txt" file in that same folder. That stores all your preferences. It is also important to use the "Set Data Location..." command to make sure all your data is stored in your Data sub-directory on the cloud drive, and not pointing to some location on your hard drive of a particular computer.
Thanks,
Mark

This should be a capture of the directory in the cloud

I believe I have been clicking on the FM.exe in the cloud under "users". One thing I noticed is at that level it is called Skydrive .

Another thing is that I restored a portfolio that was on the PC. I am pretty sure I restored it to the cloud rather than the original location.

Hi John,

Looks fine. I would suggest using the "File / File Operations / Set Data Location..." to store all your data in that "Data" folder instead of in the same directory with the program where it appears to be now. Just double click on that Fm.exe (your extensions are not being show, so it just says Fm in the screenshot) to start it. If you have troubles still, maybe a phone call would be in order.
Thanks,
Mark

Mark,,

I appreciate the support but it seems like you have already given this a lot of attention. I tried one last time and am fine with running it on one computer. I will put a copy on my laptop as well to play with though.

Thanks again.
