Mark,
I am getting a result on my cost vs Value chart I don't understand. I had 52.162 Shares of stock with a cost basis of $65.26 per share. I received an inheritance of an additional 15 shares. The cost per share at the time of death was $119.73 for a total value of $1795.95. At the time of transfer the value was $1952.7. So filling out the Transfer in form I get:
Transfer in Date = 3/30/16 shares = 15 Market Value = $1952.70 OOP = 0
Tax Cost Basis: Date = 1/19/16 Value = 1795.95
Since my original Tax basis for 52 shares was 65.26 Per share and I acquired 15 additional shares at a cost basis of $119.73 per share how does my cost basis for the stock drop to 50.76 for the new total . I would expect the cost basis to go up since each share I acquired was almost two times the value of the current tax basis. $65.26 vs $119.73. If I enter it as a purchase of 15 shares at $119.73 My cost basis goes up to $77.51 per share which is what I expected
Am I doing something wrong? or Should I not use transfer in?
