Making a new master portfolio

How do I take a current sub-portfolio and make it a new master? Thanks!

Hi Bill,

You can only have 1 top level sub-portfolio (Master Portfolio) per *.mm4 file, and you generally only want to use a single *.mm4 file, but if you're asking how to create a new .mm4 file with an existing sub-portfolio, here is how you can do it:

1) Select the sub-portfolio's contents, and use "Edit / Copy"
2) Use "File / Close Portfolio" and you'll have an empty "Master Portfolio"
3) Use "Edit / Paste"
4) Use "File / Save Portfolio As..."

Mark, I don't want to close the current master portfolio; I want to take one of the sub-portfolios and make it a new master portfolio while retaining the other subs in the current Master. Does that make sense? Bill

Hi Bill,

It sounds like you want to create another level of hierarchy. You can only have 1 top-most sub-portfolio, but you can have as much hierarchy as you want. So, if you have something like this:

- Mater Portfolio Original
  - Acct 1
  - Acct 2

You can create something like this to insert another level of hierarchy at the top:

Code: Select all

- New Master
  - Mater Portfolio Original
    - Acct 1
    - Acct 2
  - My New Sub

This way, you still have your original Master Portfolio, and nothing under it has changed, but now you also have a "My New Sub", where you can create another level of hierarchy. You do all this in the Portfolio Editor. Also, you can use link subs if you plan to have the same sub-portfolio in more than 1 location, to prevent data duplication. Mark, I currently have 3 Master Portfolios; Family, Business, Pro Bono. I want to creat a new *mmm file for Misc Accounts, to which I want to take a current sub-portfolio from Business and use it to create a new master. I will watch the videos. Thanks, Bill
