"Do Not Display investments with zero share balance" problem

Questions on using, creating, or understanding data in Fund Manager reports.

Postby Djobydjoba » Sun Jun 26, 2016 8:57 am

Hi Mark,

When I sell the last shares of an investment I set it as "hidden". Nothing unusual I suppose.

Now, in an Portfolio Value report, Investment Performance Report or Custom Report I generally want to display the investments with some shares over the entire report date range, and only these investments. Nothing unusual here too I suppose. So I select the option "Do Not Display investments with zero share balance : over entire report date range" in the report preferences, tab General.

Problem, it's not possible to get what I want, because "View / Hidden Investments" overrides "Do Not Display investments with zero share balance : over entire report date range".

Because if View Hidden investments is selected, all the investments are displayed, even with zero shares during the report date range. If View Hidden investments is not selected, the hidden investments are not displayed in the report, even with shares during the report date range.

The only way I see is to use the Hide Sold Investments command to un-hide investments with no zero shares during the report date range before generating the report, and do the opposite operation after.

Is there anything that can be done more easily ?

Thanks.

Hi Djobydjoba,

You could just not hide any of your investments, and rely on that report preference to not display investments with zero shares. Unfortunately, that means your sold investments will clutter up your Portfolio Editor and Graph views. If this is an issue for you, then the only other suggestion is to make use of the "Hide Sold Investments" command. It can hide and un-hide for any given date range.

If you have other suggestions on how to improve this, please let me know. Maybe we could make those report preferences global. That way, they would apply everywhere, and you could also optionally mark investments as hidden, which would combine with any auto-hidden investments based off share balances.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

In fact, I have the idea that the exact opposite of the current behavior would be good : instead of "View / Hidden Investments" overrides the "Do Not display investments with zero share balance option", this option overrides "View / Hidden Investments". But perhaps there are some others considerations I am not aware of. I remember that this was a request already made but it seemed to me that this was not really an option for you.

Hi Djobydjoba,

There needs to be a way to make sure everything is visible when necessary. Maybe we could make the current "View / Hidden Investments/Portfolios" command 2 parts:

"Hidden Property"
"Auto-Hidden"

so you could have control. The "Hidden Property" would display investments/portfolios where you have marked the hidden option. The "Auto-Hidden" would display investments/portfolios that are automatically hidden by commands like that report option to not show investments with a zero share balance.

This would provide more flexibility, but my concern is making it too complicated/confusing.
Thanks,
Mark

Wouldn't it be more simple to add another option in the Report Preferences, next to the "Do Not display investments with zero share balance" list, like "display hidden investments that match" that could be activated when "On Ending report date" or "Over Entire Date Range" is selected ?

As long as there can be a fix...

Hi Djobydjoba,

Good idea, I think this sounds like a better approach.
Thanks,
