OOP Historical Gain As Percent

Questions on using, creating, or understanding data in Fund Manager reports.

Postby barleypop » Mon Aug 08, 2016 1:15 am

Hello,
I'm testing out FM to see if it will work for me in testing out strategies based on some historical data.

In the Portfolio Editor one of the column options is "OOP Historical Gain" which is great but I can't seem to find a way to list this as total percent gained. I looked at creating a custom column but could not find the correct variables to select for the equation.

Also is there a ROI yield type report that lists the values only over the period the investment was owned and independent of the report date range?

Thanks in advance!

Hi barleypop,

Thanks for trying Fund Manager.

In the Portfolio Editor, you can get either the value or percentage number for this with:

OOP Historical Gain
OOP Historical %Gain

These same fields are available in a Custom report with the fields:

Gain (inception)
%Gain (inception)

For the ROI yield for the date range owned, you can use a Custom report with the field "ROI Yield (owned between). You would need to set your report date range from inception to today, as that is the ROI yield for the date range where shares are owned, and also within the date range of the report. By setting the date range to max, you'll be getting the ROI yield for whatever date range the shares were owned.
Thanks,
Mark

Hey Mark,
Thanks for the quick reply.

So I tried the "OOP Historical %Gain" but it returned NA for answers even though "OOP Historical Gain" had valid positive numbers. I'm guessing this is because my beginning report range is before I bought the stocks. Since my portfolio has dozens of stocks there is no way to pick a date that will work for all of them.

For the custom report I got the same problem with %Gain but when I selected %Gain-I (inception) that seemed to do the trick.

I will have ROI report values look reasonable but I will have go back and check.

I have another question but it belongs in another thread.
Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris,

You will get N/A for %Gain (inception) if your cost basis is negative. If you've taken more money out of an investment over the life of the investment than you put in, then a percentage gain over the life of the investment isn't meaningful. You can verify this in a Custom report in 2 ways:

1) Use "Help / Report Calculation log..." and any N/A figures from your report will be explained
2) Add "Out Of Pocket Basis (inception)" to your Custom report, and if that is negative, you won't be able to get a %.
