Gain from Investment Performance report and graph different

Questions on using, creating, or understanding data in Fund Manager reports.

Hi Mark,

The total of the Gain column in the Investment Performance report doesn't exactly matches the gain in the Portfolio Gain graph. The difference is really small, but exists. I don't see why.

What I've checked:

- The date range is exactly the same on both sides.
- This is the historical gain that is displayed on the graph
- The total End Value is the same in the Investment Performance report and in the Portfolio Value graph
- In the Portfolio Cost-Value graph type the Value is the same too as the Portfolio Value graph and the report, and the Cost value is OK too (same as total Contribution in the report). Value - Cost in this graph gives the Gain figure in the Investment Performance report. But when I switch to the Portfolio Gain graph the figure is not exactly the same....

Do you see where this difference might come from?

Thanks.

Additional info:
- The End Value in the Portfolio/Investment Value Overlay graph is slightly different from the end value in the Portfolio Value graph (and so from the Investment Performance report).
- The End Value of the Portfolio/Investment Value Overlay graph type minus the OOP (as displayed in the Portfolio Cost -Value graph) = Gain of the Portfolio Gain graph.

In brief:
A= End Value in the Portfolio Value graph = total End Value in the Investment Performance report
B= End Value in the Portfolio/Investment Value Overlay graph = End Value used in the Portfolio Gain graph for the Gain calculation

But A is not equal to B.

Hi Djobydjoba,

I assume you mean the "Portfolio Performance" report, and not the "Investment Performance"? The first is value based, and the second is price based, and wouldn't have portfolio gain figures. Some things to check:

- Are you looking at the same sub-portfolio?
- If you list your Portfolio Performance report by investment, and then compare to an investment based "Gain" graph, can you spot any differences? You can sort the report by investment stack, and scroll through the investments in the Gain graph to quickly compare each investment.
Thanks,
Mark

Sorry for the mistake, yes, I mean the Portfolio Performance

- Are you looking at the same sub-portfolio?

Yes, of course

- If you list your Portfolio Performance report by investment, and then compare to an investment based "Gain" graph, can you spot any differences?

Yes, a lot of small ones. Many with a difference of 1 on the last digit (related to rounding?), several with a more significant difference.

The End Value in the Portfolio/Investment Value Overlay graph is slightly different from the end value in the Portfolio Value graph (and so from the Investment Performance report

See this animated gif

The problem of difference is not for just one sub-portfolio (account). In at least two other of my accounts I can see such small differences.

Hi Djobydjoba,

I think there are 2 separate questions here...

1) Why is the Portfolio Performance report's Gain different than the Portfolio Gain graph
2) A separate question about the Portfolio/Investment Overlay graph

To keep things simple for now, let's focus on #1. You mentioned several of the investment gain numbers in the report are different from the investment gain graph. Can you send me one of the *.dat investment files, along with a date range to see such a difference?
Thanks,
Mark
