Portfolio Performance Report

Questions on using, creating, or understanding data in Fund Manager reports.

Postby fiscalis » Thu Dec 01, 2011 5:43 pm

Hi Mark,
I'm trying to make sense of the Portfolio Performance and attempting to get a grasp on why
more often than not the individual asset contributions column values do not total to the value shown for the portfolio as whole.

Also, the portfolio total contributions value oftentimes far exceeds any value ever achieved by the portfolio.

If you could explain how this can be (an if it's what I should expect), I think that will help a great deal. However, muy guess is that I'll have more questions to follow.

THANKS.

Hi fiscalis, fellow user here -

Within your report, go to Options / Report Preferences... / General. What is your setting for "Do Not Display Investments with Zero Share Balance:"?

In my case, I have elected to hide investments that I don't currently hold ("On Ending Report Date"). This means that my YTD Portfolio Performance has positions fall off of it as I sell them, even if I owned them earlier in the year. With this in mind, the total portfolio contribution number at the bottom of the screen is accurate - aggregate of -all- positions in the portfolio, but obviously not all positions are shown, so this may explain your discrepancy.

To check if this is the case for you too, set the option mentioned above to "Never." Once you do that, the numbers should add up right.

Hope that helps! -Matt

Hi Bill,

The "Contribution" (and "Withdrawal") columns in the Portfolio Performance report will often not add up to the total shown for the portfolio. The information for these columns is specific to that line item, not the sub-portfolio. So, for example, if you use cash in your account to buy some stock for $1,000 the cash investment will have a withdrawal of $1,000 and the stock will have a contribution of $1,000 but the sub-portfolio line will have $0 for both contribution and withdrawal, since at the sub-portfolio level nothing was contributed or withdrawn.

If the sub-portfolio contribution/withdrawal figures are not as you expect, you can see why by creating an "Investment Transaction" report for that sub-portfolio, and in the "Filter..." options check "Include Only Portfolio External Transactions (Contributions/Withdrawals)". In the example above, neither the sell of cash or buy of the stock would be listed, as those were "internal" to the sub-portfolio. Fund Manager determines internal/external by matching up amounts/dates. For more on this, you can read:
