Modifying Provided Asset Type Labels

Questions on using, creating, or understanding data in Fund Manager reports.

Postby ThomasK » Wed Feb 20, 2013 10:44 am

Hi Mark,

I have a concern that my changes to some Asset Type lables might impact reports.

Specifically, while looking at the registry -- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Beiley Software\Fund Manager\CurrentVersion\Asset Type Labels -- I see that the original label names are still there, that my name-changes show under the Data column in the registry.

For example, FM original "Domesting Bonds" I have relabeled for my use as "Bullion - Gold". Seeing this in the registry caused me to worry that I might have overstepped the bounds of the software.

My understanding is that an Asset Type label name is immaterial to the calculations that go on in reports, thus changing even the provided named asset types has no effect on bond or stock calculations whatsoever. Please say yes!

thanks,
Thomas

Hi Thomas,

There is no problem renaming your asset type labels. This is normal to do. All it is doing is changing how the label is displayed in the software, like on Reports, etc. It doesn't change any functionality.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

You said in the above post it is fine for Asset Type Labels... I wonder if it is okay to rename pre-defined Investment Goal Labels? Sector Labels?

It was during my checking out the new functionality in v2016 that I came across a comment you made, that it was best to leave the ones listed as they are and if a user needed another that they would rename one of the "User Defined ##".

Thank you,
Thomas

Hi Thomas,

If you will be using the feature that retrieves the Asset Type and Sector information you should only change the "User Defined..." ones. If you aren't retrieving this information, you can change all of them to whatever you want. For the Investment Goal it is fine to change any of them, as those aren't retrievable.

Keep in mind, if you change the labels, that doesn't change how your investments are assigned. When you assign an investment to a category, you are assigning it to a position in the category list, like 100% of the 3rd investment goal. If you change the 3rd investment goal to a completely different name, your investment is still assigned to that goal, but now with a different name.
Thanks,
Mark
