Calculating dividend yield

Questions on using, creating, or understanding data in Fund Manager reports.

Postby Ivan » Fri Apr 12, 2013 10:05 pm

I am trying to find a report field which will calculate the per cent dividend yield of a security, independently of whether I have owned it, but have recorded distribution/share for the time periods I haven't owned it. Dividend yield (between) seems to work, but I am concerned about its definition which says "distributions (distributed and reinvested)" since for the time periods I haven't owned the security the dividends have never been distributed or reinvested. Does Dividend yield accomplish what I want?

Thanks,
Ivan

Hi Ivan,

Yes, it does give you what you're looking for. The definition is just trying to say it doesn't matter whether the dividend was marked as reinvested or not for this calculation. It is using the dividend per share amounts, and the ending share price as described in the equation shown in the online help:

Just as a quick follow-on to this question, can I create a custom field that sums all of the income distributions that I add manually in Investment Properties -- Income?

This would give me a forward-looking estimate of expected dividends or income.

Hi AssetHound,

Are you asking about defining a custom report field to do this? The easiest thing to do would be to use the "Income Schedule" report, which will show you these expected income distributions.
Thanks,
Mark

I wasn't clear. What I'd like to have is a dividend/income yield percentage based on expected future income. I would calculate that by summing up all the expected income distributions / current price.

I want to add this field to a custom report that I use.

The problem with the current yield calculations, although I use them and they are helpful, is that they only include dividend/income that has already been realized. For new securities added to the portfolio, the numbers aren't helpful -- many of them being zero since nothing has been received. I use expected income information for retirement cash flow planning.

Thanks.

Hi AssetHound,

You could make use of the Custom report field:

Projected annual income

This uses the values you set in "Investment Properties... / Income" to determine how much income you can expect from an investment. If you're using the Pro/Advisor versions you can define your own field, where you divide this by the price if you'd like that figure.
Thanks,
Mark

Thanks. Found it and, after a little work, got what I needed.

There's no way to come up with a custom field that shows expected income YTD (based on the dates of the report) -- assuming that all of the income properties is completed?

Some income isn't regular quarterly income, so it would be good to know if you're on track or not based on the income properties.

Thanks.

Hi AssetHound,

You can get the expected income for any time period using an "Income Schedule" report. It isn't available as a custom report field.
Thanks,
Mark
