ROI on things that have been sold

Questions on using, creating, or understanding data in Fund Manager reports.

Postby Mary Kennedy » Tue Sep 22, 2015 11:52 am

When I sell a stock, I'd like to capture its ROI at the point of sale, so that I have a permanent record of my various investments over time. However, once the stock is sold, FM tends to put "NA" in that data field.

I think in the past I have tried to make a note of ROI at the time of sale, but if I forget, and sell it, how can I recover its ROI from date of purchase to date of sale?

Hi Mary Kennedy,

You can calculate the ROI from the date of purchase to the day of the sell. This should report an ROI. You can use a Custom report with the "ROI (between)" field, and set the date range of the report from the date of purchase to date of sell.

You may be seeing N/A when calculating a report that ends _after_ you've sold the shares. In this case, there is a yield interpolation range setting that prevents displaying yields when the term includes a period where you don't own any shares. You could turn this off (Options / Yield Interpolation Range... / Only Report ROI Yields When Item is Owned for Entire Yield Term), but keep in mind that only performance during the portion of the yield term you owned shares will be factored in, and that performance rate will be scaled for the full requested yield term. An example may help clarify... Say you owned shares for 1 month of a 3 month yield term. Say those shares increased 10% in that 1 month. The 3 month yield is going to give you a number near 30%, even though you were only earning for 1 of the 3 months. You can read more about this in the online documentation:

Well that is pretty interesting. I have also discovered that I don't really need to set the date range for the entire report to match the range for holding each specific thing. Your ROI (inception) will work provided that the END date for the report matches the sale date. So, e.g., if I sold 3 or 4 things last Tuesday, but bought them all at separate times, I don't really have to create separate reports to find each one's total ROI. I can use a one-month interval for the report as a whole and use the field called ROI ( inception) for the full everything.

Am I right? The issue is really about having the report range not extend beyond the sale date, but it doesn't have to capture the purchase date.

Hi Mary,

Yes, you are correct. That is how the ROI (inception) field works.
Thanks,
Mark
