Accrued Interest from Sale of T Bills?

Questions on using, creating, or understanding data in Fund Manager reports.

Postby heidiasst » Wed Jul 12, 2023 7:50 am

Good Morning Mark,

We have been purchasing T Bills this year.

I am trying to calculate the amount of interest
we have made on these YTD.

It does not appear in the Distribution Report and
it does not appear in the Capital Gains Report (obviously).

Where do I get these figures from (other than manually
calculate)?

Hi Heidi,

Are you trying to find how much accrued interest you received when you sold, or just the accrued interest of bills you still hold? Since T Bills don't pay interest, and are sold at a discount to their Face Value, you won't have interest transactions to sum in the Distribution Summary report. You can instead look at the difference between what you've paid and what they're worth, using something like:

Gain (inception)

in a Custom report. Or, how would you manually calculate the number you're looking for?
Thanks,
Mark

I would just pull up each individual T Bill that matured YTD and do a spread sheet.

Is there a custom report that would generate this?

Hi Heidi,

This sounds like you just want the Capital Gains report, if you're looking for how much you gained on all matured Tbills within a time period.
Thanks,
Mark

But the accrued interest does not appear on the Gains Report currently.

What changes do I need to make in the Gain report in order for the interest to
be part of the report?

Hi Heidi,

Did you record the sell transaction for when they matured? If you have both the original buy, and the final sell transaction, they should show up in the Capital Gains report. If not, you might have a filter on, like not including cash type investments. In this case, see "Options / Report Preferences... / Capital Gains".
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Heidi,

Would the Distribution Summary report give you what you need? Or maybe a customized version of the portfolio performance report which would include Beginning Value and the Ending Value plus Accumulated Interest?

Hi Mark, how would one record the income tab for T-Bill versus T-Notes/Bonds? As T-Bills do not have income, if i leave it blank then the T-bill does not show up in bond summary report. What are the fields that one can add in the custom report to include the T-bill income in addition to the bond interest/dividends. thanks much!

Hi divinest,

I believe T Bills would be considered a type of zero coupon bond, so this tip would apply:

For Zero Coupon Bonds that redeem at face value, set the Coupon Rate to 0% and the Payment Frequency to the desired accrual period for YTM and Accretion calculations.
Thanks,

The investment type doesn't affect whether something shows up in the Bond Summary report. The Bond Summary report includes any investments with their Income Style property set to "Bond Interest".
