Qualified v. non-qualified dividends

Questions on using, creating, or understanding data in Fund Manager reports.

Is there a way to specify whether a dividend is non-qualified or qualified? If I label the distributions as bond interest income in the Properties section when I import data, the income distribution is still listed as dividend income. This happens with various bond ETFs.

Hi LungDoc,

There is no default tracking of qualified versus non-qualified, but you can define these under “Options / Distribution Labels…”.

I didn’t follow the second part of your question. What Properties are you looking at, and which “list” are you looking at?
Thanks,
Mark

Sorry for the confusing 2-part question. Let's say I click on Bond ETF, and then right click to open Properties. I then open the Income tab where there are 3 choices: dividend, bond interest and no income. If I choose bond interest, the retrieved data still is downloaded as a dividend and labeled as such. I can manually edit each downloaded transaction to a non-qualified dividend to achieve my goal. Using the options tab, then the distributions label I made a user-defined label for "non-qualified dividend." I was hoping that I could automate the process without having to edit each distribution.

Hi LungDoc,

The "Income" tab in the "Investment Properties" dialog box is for entering expected future income for the Income Schedule Graph and Report. It won't change how retrieved transactions are recorded. If you are retrieving from your broker, and the broker reports a dividend, it will be put in the dividend type of distribution. If you've created a 2nd "non-qualified dividend" distribution type, you'd have to manually move any appropriate distributions into that bucket. Sorry, there isn't a more automated way of doing this. Unless the distribution type was specified, there isn't a way to do this. I don't believe the OFX spec supports this distinction currently.
Thanks,
Mark
