Graph a "Display Hidden Investments with Activity"

Questions on using, creating, or understanding data in Fund Manager graphs.

Postby Djobydjoba » Sat Sep 16, 2023 6:19 am

Hi Mark,

With the report option "Display Hidden Investments with Activity" checked, and the general option "View hidden investments" is not activated.
In the report, right click on such an investment (i.e. a displayed "hidden investments with activity") > Graph, and select a graph type.
Problem : the correct/asked graph is not displayed (because the investment is hidden in the graph window)

Maybe this may be considered as a bug?

Hi Djobydjoba,

I see the same issue, thank you. In this case, there are a few options we could implement:

1) Prompt the user that this is a hidden investment, and ask for permission to turn on "View / Hidden Investments/Portfolios" to display it

2) Just turn on "View / Hidden Investments/Portfolios" without prompting

3) Force the graph to display this investment, even though it is hidden.

I'm leaning towards option 1. What would be your preference?
Thanks,
Mark

As you, option 1 looks good (the better) to me.

This was also addressed in Beta 4...

Thanks.

I didn't realize that turning on the hidden investments changes totally the appearance of the report. All the hidden investments with zero values are now displayed in the report. It seems to me that the user doesn't expect that, to make a mess in its report just to see a graph from it... It seems to me the integrity of the report shouldn't be altered in the process.

So now, the option 3) "Force the graph to display this investment, even though it is hidden", looks better to me...

What do you think?

Hi Djobydjoba,

That may be better, but that will have to wait for another major release, as it isn't a small change, the way things work currently...
Thanks,
Mark

OK, actually the informative prompt is fine like that too.

Seems to me that it would be slightly better and helpful if the dialog could ask between the two choices:
1) Turn On Hidden Investments AND (then) graphes the investment (i.e. in the wake)
2) Cancel the action (don't Turn On the option and don't graph)

Currently the dialog just offers to turn on Hidden Investments, but the investment is not graphed, so we have to redo the action, and this time it is more painful because we have to find the investment we wanted to graph among all the investments in the report (and there may be many more, with all the hidden ones now displayed).

Hi Djobydjoba,

Agreed, that would indeed be better. Thanks for the feedback.
