Dividends

Questions on using, creating, or understanding data in Fund Manager graphs.

Postby ML » Thu Oct 06, 2011 5:00 am

Recently received a 40% special dividend from a holding, with a month between xd and payment. Obviously SP went down from xd date and my portfolio values/share and distribution graphs show a big dip. Didn't want to amend the dividend received date since it makes reconciliation more difficult

Could portfolio values/graphs reflect accrued income - given that we already record 'based on shares held at'?

Hi ML,

Yes, this is possible. Maybe it could be added as an option.

As a work-around you could record this yourself by creating an investment to track "accrued distributions". You can treat it like cash, and record a reinvested distribution for the dividend amount on the ex-dividend date, and then zero it out with a negative reinvestment on the same date you receive the dividend. It would only have a balance between the ex-dividend date and the date you receive the dividend. By recording the shares in this investment as reinvested distributions your performance will be accurately reflected. To deal with reconciliation, you can go into this investment's properties under the "Other" tab and turn on the property "Ignore when Reconciling".
Thanks,
Mark
