"Closing" expired Covered-call transactions

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby clivusmul » Thu Jun 25, 2015 8:56 am

Hello Mark,

New evaluation user here... Good program so far... I notice the following in a portfolio view of a account holding several stock investments. On a prior date, I sold a option and received premium income for the sale. On the date of the option expiration, I entered a "buy" transaction for the exact number of shares corresponding to the prior "sell".

Question: The portfolio register view still shows the option holding with "zero" shares in the quantity cell. I go to the data register and see a "sell" for say 200 shares and then the "buy" for the same number of shares and the net shares are now zero.

I do NOT want to continue seeing the expired transaction in the portfolio view... DO I now Close this transaction to eliminate seeing the specific holding in the register and if so, does closing the line item delete all prior transaction data? Is there a "switch setting" to NOTshow holdings with zero share balances?

I fear losing the transaction data because the original sell is a taxable event and I don't want to lose the history of the income received when the Call was sold.
Thanks, bob j

Hi Bob,

It is best to "hide" investments that you've sold and no longer own. This way they are retained in your portfolio, and part of your historical records. Closing an investment removes it from your portfolio. You can either manually hide a particular investment using "Investment Properties... / Other / Hidden" or in bulk using "File / File Operations / Hide Sold Investments...". To toggle on/off the display of hidden items you use the "View / Hidden Investments/Portfolios" command. There are also some report specific options that automatically do not display investments with zero shares, but it is usually easiest to just mark them as hidden, so they aren't displayed anywhere in the program. For more on this, see:

Thanks,
Mark

Thank you Mark for the prompt reply... Perfectly understood. I had a notion that "closing" would delete all historical data and I did not want to do that... KInd regards, BJ
