Same Asset, two portfolios

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby rhaufed » Thu Oct 22, 2015 2:08 am

Hi all,

I'm new user of FM and have set up my protfolios as I wished them to be. Pretty amazing software, nothing close on market as far as I know.
My problem is:

I have one asset, let's say it is IBM and it is traded with 2 different aproaches (and for this reason I need part of the transactions to be linked to one portfolio and part to another). I mean, suppose I have a long term portfolio and a short term portfolio. Now, if I have 1000 IBM, and 400 should be registered under Short Term and 600 at Long term for monitoring purposes, how can (if I can) do that?

Hope you get what I mean.

Hi Rhaufed,

You can do this with one of the three category sets.

If all 1000 shares are held in a single account, you probably want to only have 1 investment to track all 1000 shares. If you have this in 2 different accounts, then you can create 2 separate investments.

Assuming you do have all shares in a single account, use one of the categories, like "Investment Goal". You can customize the names, so you can have one goal called "long term", and one "short term". Assign 60% to long term goal, and 40% to short term goal. You can watch a tutorial on using categories. We have a list of all the tutorials here:

Towards the bottom, click on the "Categories" tutorial.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

Thank you for your answer. It will help me to do other things I had in mind, but I did not make myself clear, and asked something different than what I had in mind. So, let me be specific on what I have to handle and may be you can guide me.

I have a company stock program that works like that:

Every year I can buy a certain authorized amount of shares and, if I hold it for 3 years, the company will gift me with the same amount of shares I bought 3 years before, doubling my position.
After 3 years , these stocks (the amount I bought and the company gift) will be free to be traded in the market.
If I trade the stocks I bought before 3 years window has completed, then the company will not reward me.

So, basically what I need is to know how many stocks I have “free” to sell or to sell options on it (covered call) , and how many is better not to touch.

Hi Rhaufed,

In this case, it sounds like you're better off creating 2 investments. You can have 2 investments for the same security. Each has the same name/symbol, but they would have different transactions. Please see:
