Using Historic Exchange Rates

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby Septaj » Wed Oct 28, 2009 7:45 pm

Hello -

Bit lost when it comes to exchange rates and the way FM uses these. Have set up a separate portfolio & investment as you have directed. Apparently updating the price for this investment - using Yahoo - provides the current exchange rate which is - somehow - referred to for viewing exchange-rate adjusted tables and graphs.

I have imported historic exchange rates into the exchange rate investment. However, upon checking particular historic dates I see that FM uses the current exchange rate rather than the exchange rate applicable at that historic date.

1) Would it not be better to have FM use the exchange rate applicable historically

2) Why does it not seem to matter where the exchange rate portfolio is placed: the rate is still referred to. Seems a bit magical - could you flesh this out for us.

Thanks & regards.
Septaj

Hi Septaj,

It sounds like you may still need to "assign" this exchange rate investment. Go under "Options / Currency Settings..." and assign it to be used to exchange between the desired currency and your default. This is how Fund Manager knows what investment to use as the exchange rate. Your historical prices in this exchange rate investment will be used when figuring out exchange rates for a certain date.

If you haven't seen it already, we have a tutorial on this here:

Thanks,
