Purchase Price in Investments Pane Cuts off Decimal

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby Ivan » Thu Nov 18, 2010 4:59 pm

I am just trying out Fund Manager. For the first purchase I entered:
Value = 20,014.55
Shares = 637
Commission = 6.95

The dialog correctly calculated the price as 31.420016

But when I accepted the data and viewed it in the Investments Pane the price shows as 31.42 and it resets the value to 20,014.54, one cent too little. Can someone tell me what I can do to fix this?

Thanks,
Ivan

Hi Ivan,

The order you edit the value/shares/price fields is important. You should really only edit in the value/shares field, and let FM determine the price, which is where you want any rounding to go. So, try this:

Open up the buy/sell dialog, and enter 20,014.55 in the value, 637 in the shares, and then hit "Tab" on your keyboard to move the focus to the price field. Do not edit it. Hit "Tab" again to move down to the commission field, and enter 6.95. Press OK. If you edit this transaction now, it should show the correct information. Fund Manager actually records the price to more than the 6 displayed price digits, so you don't get any value rounding, but if you specifically edit the price field, it will only record it as you've entered it. Hi Mark,

I went to the edit dialog and reentered the values exactly as you instructed, but it did not help. Interestingly, when I go to the edit dialog, the value shows as 20,014.55 and the price has the full decimal value before I make any changes, even though the Investments Pane shows 20,014.54.

What else could I be doing wrong?

Hi Ivan,

I just test entered this as well, and can't reproduce a problem. It shows up as 20,021.50 under the "Total" column in the Data Register, which is the 20014.55 + 6.95 commission. Where specifically are you looking, that you are saying "Investments Pane"?
Thanks,
Mark

I am looking at the right hand pane in what I assume is the main (home) window. The left pane shows the the Portfolio Tree. I can send images of the screens in question if this forum allows sending multiple images, or I can email them to you if that will help.

Thank,
Ivan

Hi Ivan,

I believe you are referring to the "Portfolio Editor" window. Are you looking at the "Value" column? The "Value" is calculated here as the "closing" share price times the number of shares owned. The closing price is not necessarily the same as your purchase price. Recorded closing prices and purchase prices are independent.

In the "Data Register" window (which you can open with "Edit / All Data..."), you can view your recorded closing prices under "Prices" data type. You can view your recorded transactions under the "Investments (all)" data type.

I test entered your transaction, and the "Value" column in the Portfolio Editor is showing $20,014.55. I made sure I did not have a closing price recorded prior to recording the purchase. If you don't have a closing price recorded already, then FM will record one using your purchase price.

If you still have the problem, try deleting the purchase and also delete the recorded closing price on the same date. You may have a closing price recorded slightly incorrect from an earlier transaction recorded on this date. Delete both price and transaction on this date, and then re-record the buy using the method previously described to eliminate rounding errors.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi again Mark,

Sorry to be such a pest on this, but it's not working. I deleted the purchase as you suggested. I then selected the 'prices' data type and an entry shows up for the date in question showing a close value of 31.20. If I select the line and try to delete it I get 'Zero price points not allowed'. If I edit the line and try to zero the closing price field I get 'Price is not allowed to be zero'.

At this point the right pane of the Portfolio Editor still shows a line for the investment with a price of 31.420 and 0 for both shares and value. I then create a new purchase. The 'Buy or Sell Transaction' window comes up with all fields empty except for 'price' which contains 31.42. So I delete the 31.42 and enter the Value, Shares, tab 3 times to get to Commission and enter 6.95. At this point, the Price field has changed to 31.420016, which is correct. The values in the line on the window labeled "Data Register: my investment" now gives the Date, a Price of 31.20, Shares of 637.000, Total of 20,021.50, Fee of 6.95 and Type of Purchase. I select 'Done' and I am back to the Portfolio Editor with the Value field on the right of 20,014.54.

Sorry if this description is too long, but hopefully there is something which will help resolve this. I'm beginning to worry that my 60 uses will run out before I can get enough data in to make a decision.

Hi Ivan,

Please try this:

1) Open the Data Register, and select "Investments (all)" and delete the purchase.
2) Change the data type to "Prices". Click "New..." and enter a price of $1 (just for testing) for the day _prior_ to your purchase.
3) Select the price on the date of the transaction, and press "Delete".
4) Go back to "Investments (all)" and record the transaction.

That should straighten things out.
Thanks,
Mark

Thanks Mark. Looks like that did it. I'll go on with my data entry and testing. Hope it goes more smoothly after this.
