QIF transfer problem

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby docmark » Sat Jan 19, 2008 7:54 pm

Been using FM for 4-5 yrs now. Currently have v8.7 and Quicken 2006 Deluxe. At the end of every year I transfer my mutual fund transactions from Quicken to FM. Never had a problem using the QIF system until today. Transfer made to a .QIF file, can open it with Notepad, but transactions won't show up in the "transaction box" in FM. Must be missing something simple here. Running WinXP Home, no new changes this year except for updating FM sometime this past year ('07). Thanks, Mark

Hi docmark,

What import settings are you using? Make sure you aren't excluding because of date. Also, turn on the option to create new investments as needed.

If you look at the QIF file in Notepad, do you see your transactions that you're trying to import?
Thanks,
Mark

Not sure what you mean by "import settings" but my Quicken export dates are accurate; yes, the transactions show up in Notepad. Tried again tonite and found that "create new investments" solved the problem. However, this then creates a new graph of the previously saved investment and i have to delete the original one. Seems OK, I don't lose any of my previosly saved data (prices, distributions, etc.) ? this is a new feature of the latest version. Don't remember the "create new investment" option being there in older versions. Thanks, Mark

Hi docmark,

When importing from a QIF file, Fund Manager matches up transactions with existing investments based on the "Name" property. It sounds like the transactions you were importing had a different name, thus created new investments. If you are only importing transactions for last year, it would be better to update your existing investments rather than creating new ones. That way, you would maintain your full transaction history. You can look at the "Name" property of the new investments that you just imported and modify the "Name" property of your prior investments to be the same, and then do the import again.
Thanks,
Mark

OK. all seems well and able to transfer all transactions. Unfortunately, when I click "save all investments" or "save portfolio" which I always do after importing anything, I get an error message that says, "file is marked as read only attribute" and acts as if it doesn't want to save any of the most recently changed/updated investments. I tried saving the entire portfolio under a new name--see if that works next time I import. My Win XP Home did crash here recently and I had to reload most everything. Then retrieved FM data from a CD-RW I use to backup weekly. Not sure if that caused any snags or not. Never had that error window appear in 3 or so years of using FM. Overall, I must say my experience with FM has been very positive! Thanks, Mark

Hi docmark,

My guess is that when you restored off of CD-RW, your files were marked with the read-only attribute. Just go select the properties of these files in Windows (using My Computer or Windows Explorer) and turn off the read-only property.
Thanks,
Mark
