Keeps retrieving same transactions after share split

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby inndsfdsfrcus » Thu Mar 31, 2011 6:30 pm

Here is what I did:

1. Used new portfolio wizard to create new portfolio
2. Retrieved all past transactions
3. Manually went into 2 investments and added a "split" in the data register
4. Edit - Internet Retrieve - Transactions - etc.

What I see are the original transactions associated with step 2 above for the investments in step 3. Even if I import them, the next transaction retrieve grabs them. The main annoyance is I have to manually un-check these transactions every time I retrieve transactions for the entire portfolio.

The split I added comes after all the pas transactions (brk.b 50:1 on 1/23/10 and aib 82:412 on 2/22/11).

I don't know why the system does not ignore these past transactions, since, they are already in the data register. The retrieve function will just let me add the transactions over and over again, incrementing the number of shares upward.

I think I figured out the trick. I had "View - Split Adjusted" checked while doing all of these split adjustments. I do not expect the system to interpret the splits differently with this checked, but it does. So, my fix was to:

1. Close out the portfolio
2. Create a new one
3. Import all of the transactions
4. Make sure that the "View - Split Adjusted" was not checked
5. Manually go in and add the splits

now, the system does not try to re-import transactions that already got imported. Will work with the system with "View- Split Adjusted" unchecked from now on.

p.s. Is there a way to have the system automatically update the shares on a split-adjusted basis? Or is this always a manual process? Thanks.

Hi inndsfdsfrcus,

Thanks for the problem report. I see this same issue. We will get it fixed for the next release. The option to skip transactions already in Fund Manager should work whether or not "View / Split Adjusted" is on or off.

Different brokers handle reporting splits differently. Some report them as split transactions, some report them as a purchase of additional shares at a cost of $0. Fund Manager will update your data however it is reported by the broker. However, if your broker reports splits as a purchase at a cost of $0, you may prefer to delete this purchase, and manually record a split transaction in Fund Manager. The split transaction more accurately reflects what really happened, and can take into account the share price drop when plotting graphs, etc.
Thanks,
Mark
