Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby fiscalis » Thu Aug 25, 2011 5:33 pm

Hi Mark - when importing transactions for a new security that has already been entered in FM within a different account, is there a way to have FM pull the investment properties from the previously entered security data?

I'm attempting to avoid having to repeat work that has already been done and hoping there is a FM feature for this I'm not aware of.

THANKS!!

Hi fiscalis,

By default, if your import does not contain the investment attributes, and you have another investment with the same symbol in another sub-portfolio, the properties from that other investment will be used to initialize the defaults for your new investment. How are you importing transactions? From what source?
Thanks,
Mark

I'm importing them from TD Ameritrade via their advisor downloads.

Hi fiscalis,

With TD Ameritrade imports from their institutional interface you will get a .SEC file in addition to y our .TRN transaction file. That .SEC file contains the security information, like Name, investment type and for fixed income it includes coupon rate, maturity date, etc. So, this information will come from the .SEC file if you have one present at the time of import. Other information not present in that file, like Asset Type and Investment Goal assignments will come from other existing investments with the same symbol if present.
Thanks,
Mark

Ok - I opened the .sec file in Excel and see the data you're talking about. Here's one security's info from the .sec file: DFTCX MU DFA INVT DIMENSIONS GROUP T.A. U.S. CORE EQUITY 2 0 0 0 0.104 DFA INVT DIMENSIONS GROUP T.A. U.S. CORE EQUITY 2

After importing this, and other securities that were already in FM, I had to change most all the investment property attributes, that were already set for the symbol in other portfolios. These changes included asset type, goal assignments, etc.

How can I troubleshoot this?

THANKS.
Bill

All I did was import the transactions from the file/import/transactions/TD Ameritrade dialogue. Should I have done something else too?

Hi Bill,

That is the normal way the .SEC file is imported (along with your transactions). Are you sure importing transactions changed asset type and investment goals of some of your other investments? This should not happen. Can you try reproducing this, by maybe changing some asset type or investment goal, and then re-importing? If you can reproduce this problem, please let me know.
Thanks,
Mark
