Generic Price Import Key

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby Clive » Tue May 01, 2012 1:49 pm

Hi Mark,

I'm looking to use the Generic Price Import function to capture the price history for an ETF. I downloaded a CSV file from Yahoo Finance with the following data fields:

Date_Open_High_Low_Close_Volume_Adj Close

I'm not using the "Adj Close" data field. However, I can't see the appropriated "key" for the "close" field in the FM Help screen. The closest "key" seems to be "NAV" but I've always considered NAV and the daily closing price to be separate entities.

Can you please comment.

Hi Clive,

NAV is the right key to import a closing price. However, there is a much easier way to do this than download the CSV file and use a generic price import. Just retrieve prices using the "Yahoo (Historical)" quote server. See "Options / Internet Settings..." to select your current and historical quote servers. To update for just a single investment, right mouse click on it, and choose "Retrieve Selected Historical Prices".
Thanks,
Mark

Thanks Mark,

Yahoo Historical only has 3 months of historical price data on their quote server, but 11+ years of price data if I download a CSV file from Yahoo Financial website. Could be because I'm looking at a Canadian iShares 'XGD' ETF.

Best regards,
Clive

Hi Clive,

How are you determining that Yahoo only has 3 months on their quote server? Yahoo doesn't seem to have the symbol XGD, but maybe you are looking at XGD.TO? I just used Fund Manager to retrieve 11 years worth of historical prices for XGD.TO with the "Yahoo (Historical)" quote server.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

I fear I'm going to be eating a slice of humble pie on this one!

At some point, possible before I wrote on the message board, I must have tried to get price data from Canada Stockwatch (3M Historical) quote server which is my default quote server. I was able to get data back to 2012-02-02. (P.S. now I realise "3M Historical" means 3-months historical data.)

Additionally, I've discovered that the Canada Stockwatch server will recognise stock symbols without the exchange suffix (XGD vs XGD.TO) at least for ETFs that is. Yahoo will not. So, once I added the exchange suffix, everything worked like a charm.

Thanks again, Mark

Clive
