Recording stock dividends

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby cshrimpt » Wed Aug 15, 2012 7:22 am

KMR pays dividends in shares. My statement has no price indicated, just says I have more shares. How do I record this distribution in FM? It will not let me enter a zero dollar transaction. This is a non-taxible event, so it should be recorded at zero dollars or somehow indicated it is non-taxable.

Thanks,

Craig

Hi Craig,

You can record this with a Split transaction. Use a ratio of <new shares> for <old shares>. For example, if you started with 100 shares, and ended up with 103 shares, record a 103 for 100 split.
Thanks,
Mark

When I download transactions, the dividends usually come down as a transactions and FM automatically adds them to my totals. If I have it set to reinvest dividends, it does that for me too.

Mark,
Just want to point out that one may also need to delete the 'purchase' of the additional shares under Transactions otherwise shares would be double-counted. EEQ has this same situation and I have to manually record the 'split' and delete the purchase (transactions imported from Scottrade Inst).
