Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby belswick » Sat Nov 17, 2007 3:53 pm

Trying to retrieve transactions from Charles Schwab, I get the following error message: The recorded account number of <xxxx-xxxx> (my account number) is not available for the specified User ID and password. Choose the correct account number....etc.

I am using the correct account number, User ID, and password, so is there any other trick that I need to know to retrieve transactions from my Schwab account? Is some sort of additional registration required? Thanks in Advance.

Hello belswick,

Do you see a list of available account numbers to choose from? Do they look similar to yours? Maybe they are just formatted slightly different? The one tip we have on retrieving from Charles Schwab is to make sure your password is not longer than 8 characters. We don't have tips on many brokers, but the ones we do have are shown here:

I think I learned something here:

You have to enter your Schwab account number without the dash between the two groups of four numbers. Your User ID is your web user ID. Your password is your web account password. Then you have to try to retrieve several times. The first time will come back with no results and no error message, but the second or subsequent tries will return some data.

As with the AmCen experience, older transaction data is not available. In Schwab's case, nothing before November 2005 can be retrieved. I have tried to retrieve all dates, and also tried specifying specific older date ranges with no results. As you might expect, the initial balances are also unavailable.

Hello belswick,

Thanks for sharing these tips on Schwab. For some comments on the issue of not retrieving all the way back, see the post I just made here:

Is there a method for logging into a web site using a Security Token, that adds a passcode to the password, other than editing the Transaction Retrieve Settings each time? I was thinking about a pop-up that would ask for the current passcode and then add it to the password before connecting to the web site. Schwab and E-Trade have a Security Token option for enhanced login authentication.

Hi jw,

The security token you're describing is on these broker's "Web" servers. The transaction retrieve feature uses a different server, called the "Open Financial Exchange" server. This server does not use a token like the web server does. The method of logging into the OFX server is publicly documented, and is secured via HTTPS.
Thanks,
Mark
