Stock Split - Specific Number of Shares?

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby MerrittMarkA » Tue Feb 03, 2015 12:05 pm

A rather unusual split occurred on 2/2/2015:

Access Midstream Partners LP (ACMP) showing split on major web sites as a ration of 604:569. (1.061511423550088)

In reality, it appears in my account to be about 5 additional shares for every 90. (1.05555555..6)

Regardless, the software wants a ratio, and I received a rounded number of shares.

I wish to enter a specific number of shares received in the split, because no matter what ratio I seem to give the software, I can't dial in the rounded number of shares that showed up in my brokerage account.

Thoughts?

Hi MerrittMarkA,

2 thoughts:

1) Maybe you actually received the full split ratio, but your fractional shares were sold? If so, just record the split, plus a sell of the fractional shares. If this is what happened, this more accurately records what happened than method #2 below.

2) If you want to record it so you end up with a certain number of shares, just record it with a ratio of <new_shares> for <old_shares>. The second number does not have to be 1. For example, if you had 54 shares, and ended up with 73, record it as a ratio of 73 for 54.
Thanks,
Mark

Thank you. #2 is an elegant solution.

I suppose I got lost in the trees and missed the forest.

The transaction was a pre-merger corporate action, the shares become WPZ and it will be a few days before my brokerage account settles, so perhaps I will see some fractional shares turned into cash. That transaction is likely, but hasn't posted yet.

Cheers,
Mark
