How to record "split"

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby David S. Anderson » Fri Aug 15, 2008 11:34 am

I need help recording a "split". VTI split in June, but they only split the integer value of the shares held. In my case that was 63.711 before the split and 126.711 after. I can recored a purchase of 63 shares on the day of the split which makes the numbers balance but the price+distribution graph does not reflect the split properly.

Thanks

Hi David,

Could it be that they sold your partial shares from the split? This is quite common. If so, you would record this as a 2:1 split, and then a second transaction selling the partial shares (0.711).
Thanks,
Mark

It does not appear that any fractional shares were sold. If I just double the integer portion and add it back I get the total shares in the account.

Hi David,

According to both Yahoo and Google, VTI had a 2:1 split in June. You might look in your account, and see if you got some money deposited after the split for the sale of the partial shares. If the partial shares weren't sold, then I can't understand/explain it, and you should ask your broker for the details.
Thanks,
Mark

Thanks Mark. I got it now. Chuck could use a bit more detail on the statements for these type of transacations. I followed your advice - doubled the fractional pre-split shares then recorded a redemption post-split for 1/2 the fraction. Anyway the numbers work.
