Multiple Cash Accounts

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby WhiteFox » Wed Oct 07, 2009 8:40 am

Listing and retrieving cash holdings has always been tricky for me. Currently I have a Schwab account with a cash sweep that is used directly for cash transactions. However, the sweep does have a ticker symbol, but it is internal to the Schwab system. Should this sweep fund be the "default cash account" in FM, or listed under the ticker symbol? Other long-term cash is invested in what is technically a "mutual fund" also with a ticker symbol and a share price of 1. The only difference is that the two funds have differing yields. What is the preferred way to retrieve and display these various cash funds, yet still obtain a net cash value which includes both funds?

Thanks!

Hi WhiteFox,

Cash can be tricky... You can have this sweep account be your default cash account, and leave it assigned with the symbol from Schwab. That is no problem. You generally want to turn off the option to retrieve prices for your cash accounts, so the symbol really wouldn't matter. Turn off price retrieve under "Investment Properties... / Internet Retrieve / Retrieve Price".

Your default cash account should be set to whatever investment receives proceeds when you sell, and funds purchases when you buy.
Thanks,
Mark
