I'm a personal user and am very pleased with the software in the 4 years I've been a user.
One feature that would be IMMENSLY helpful for me, is to have a free-text field (same # of chars as memo is probably fine) that I can enter "Tags" into. I also would need the ability to run reports displaying, grouping, sorting and filtering on these tags. Having the ability to use wildcards would be hugely helpful, but I would be OK with starting with just a single tag. I would like to hope/think that it would be a small change, but with huge payoffs for a user.
For example, my desired end state, would be able to tag a transaction with "TY2014". I would then be able to run a report of transactions that contain "TY2014", which represents transactions that affect Tax year 2014, but did occur in that calendar year.
If the ability to use wildcards are added, then I could expand it's use. Then, my tag field would be populated with "TY2014, O_Dad, U_Pat". The other two tags would allow me to filter on only those transactions that have "*O_Dad*" in them which makes it easier to run reports on accounts that within one portfolio that represent characteristics to which there is no field. Currently I utilize a fairly complex set of folders containing linked sub-portfolios (which is a GREAT feature btw) that I can at least focus in on the accounts of interest.
I tried doing something like this with the memo field, but did not seem to have that caliber of flexibility, and wasn't really available to filter on this way in the reports.
I'd like to maintain the memo field as it's intended because I do use it for making notes on purpose of sales and purchases.
I hope I explained this well. It is pretty much the only feature I've desired since I've starting using FM.
