Real time price update

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby gmsimon » Mon Jul 08, 2013 1:46 pm

Just upgraded to Professional version (primarily for real-time updates). I have tried Yahoo (real time) and Google (real time) as default servers.

I notice Yahoo real-time is slower than std Yahoo server (takes about 2.5 minutes to update now versus about 40 seconds previous to going 'real time'. Have a total of about 350-400 symbols in various portfolios) Google real-time is even much slower than Yahoo. Is this to be expected? If not, any ideas?

Thanks.

Hi gmsimon,

Yes, this is to be expected. The Yahoo quote server is very fast, as it supports retrieving 10 symbols per request, where most other quote servers (including Yahoo (Realtime)) are limited to 1 at a time. One option would be to only use Yahoo (Realtime) on the quotes you are most interested in getting real time quotes, and then Yahoo for all the others. You can set your default global quote server under "Options / Internet Settings...", and you can override on a per-investment basis under "Investment Properties... / Internet Retrieve".
Thanks,
Mark

Mark - good idea (some of the symbols are mutual funds that don't change intraday).

Thanks

Mark:
I notice I am not getting the day-high or day-low prices (just current price) when using Yahoo real-time server (if I change to std Yahoo, I do). Is that to be expected??

Also have 2 stocks that show NA as 'basis' & can't figure out why - property says 'Stock' for type and transactions appear correct and unit prices are retrieved ok - just no basis figure. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Hi Gary,

Yes, the Yahoo (Realtime) quote server only updates the closing/last price. You could consider later using Yahoo (Historical) to backfill the other data.

For the Basis showing N/A, could these investments maybe be marked as using "Specific Lot" for the accounting method, and need to have their lots specified? See "Investment Properties... / Other / Accounting Method". To specify lots, use "Investment Data / Specify Lots...".
Thanks,
Mark

Yes - I use 'Specific Lots' for the accounting method & that was exactly the problem.

Thanks for the great support.
