General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

I'm not sure if this is the way is was in Version 8 or not, but this is what I'm seeing in Ver 9, Beta 3.
I'm working on matching up a portfolio's balances and transactions going back a few months and I've noticed that in BOTH the Portfolio Editor and the Portfolio Value report, all a portfolio's investments are listed, even those with zero shares either because they've been sold or have not yet been purchased.
For example, when the portfolio transferred in, there were 4 mutual fund investments in it. About a month later we liquidated all these 4 holdings and replaced them with a single fund. Reports before the sell date, show the old funds and the NEW one which has yet to be bought. Reports after the sell date, list the same holdings with the share numbers at zero for the sold shares and the correct share numbers for the new investment. The portfolio editor simply shows everything open and sold. The balances are all correct, becuase the share numbers are adjusting accordingly.
Is this working as designed, or is there some way to eliminate and add holdings based on transaction buy and sell dates?
THANKS!
Bill

Hi Bill,
There are a couple of features that help you control how this works. The first feature is the 'hidden' attribute of investments and sub-portfolios. To read about how to use this, see:
http://www.fundmanagersoftware.com/faq_hide_sold.php
This 'hidden' functionality is largely un-changed from version 8 to 9.
A new feature in version 9 affects reports. See "Options / Report Preferences... / General / Do Not Display Investments With Zero Share Balance". Using these options you can automatically display only investments that owned shares during the reporting period. This is independent of the 'hidden' feature.

HI Mark,
Unless I'm missing something, I cannot get the zero share investments to disappear from either the report or the portfolio editor display.
Perhaps I've missed something?
Bill

I figured it out - I had View Hidden investments selected.
Thanks!

Hi Mark,
I'm playing with this feature again and have noticed that if the View Hidden Investments feature is checked, I cannot get the report to stop showing the zero share balance investments even though the report preferences are set in a way to do just that. So in my experience, the "View Hidden Investments" check feature is acting as a kind of gatekeeper on the reports. Consequently, if the view hidden investments feature is activated, I can turn them on or off using the report preferences, however it doesn't work the other way around.
Is this as designed?
Thanks!
Bill

Hi Bill,
Yes, this is as designed. You can read this in the online help here:
http://www.fundmanagersoftware.com/help ... neral.html
If you have "View / Hidden Investments" turned on, you will always see everything. This includes hidden investments, and also investments with a zero share balance. Normally, you would not leave this option on, unless you were searching for a hidden/sold investment.

Is there a way to mass unhide investments? I have been using the program for a while, and upgraded. With the new feature to not show zero balance shares in the reports (which is great) I ended up having a lot of hidden stuff. Since I trade some of the same stocks often they do not hit up in the report if they are set to hidden. I have been going thru one by one and changing them when I realize a stock is missing, but is there an easier way?
thanks

Hi gerhardps,
Yes. Use "File / File Operations / Hide Sold Investments...". Set the date range to cover your full history, or a very wide date range. Check the option to un-hide non-sold investments. Any investment that owned any shares at any time during the specified date range will have the hidden attribute removed.
