Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager
by Djobydjoba » Sun Nov 16, 2014 6:28 am
Hi Mark,
Is there an easy way to convert the investments in the default currency to another currency ?
In my watch lists there are investments in EUR (my default currency), USD, and some others currencies. What I am looking at is to convert temporarily all my investments in USD, because I want to see all the graphs from an USD point a view (it's a watch list, there is no transactions). But the conversion has to be revertible.
I've tried with currency templates but it seems it doesn't do the job I'm looking for, because a 100€ price investment become a 100USD price investment, there's is no adjustment of the price.
To summary, I would like to the see my investments with the "glasses" of a unique currency, other than the EUR (my actual default currency), with dynamic and reversible conversion. Is there a way to do that ?
Thanks.

Hi Djobydjoba, Yes, if you want to be able to see all your data adjusted into multiple "default" currencies, use currency templates as described here: https://www.fundmanagersoftware.com/hel ... rency.htmlOne tip you might not have noticed is that you don't actually assign any of your investments directly to the top-most currency selection, as that position changes depending on your loaded currency template. Assign your investments to Currency 2-25, leaving the "Default Currency" able to change.

Hi Mark,
Awesome!
What would you recommand for indexes ? Their prices have not to be converted but a currency has to be defined though.
Create a special currency for them, for example "PTS" ("points"), with constant ratio "1" ?
When the "Type" field of an investment is "Index", don't you think the currency field should be disabled then, to prevent currency ajustments ?
Thanks.

Hi Djobydjoba,
Indices usually do have a currency. For example, the S&P500 is quoted in USD. Are you maybe meaning to ask about exchange rate investments?

Hi Mark, No, I really mean indexes, not exchange rates investments. I have to disagree about indexes. Strictly speaking an index is not related to any specific currency. We talk of them with "points" or "units". As an mere example, no USD mention on the bloomberg page for the S&P : http://www.bloomberg.com/quote/SPX:IND. In this way, an index should not be adjustable, because there is no meaning to do this. Just an other example of an investment (for market watch list) that should not be ajustable : the US 10 years Yield Bond : http://www.bloomberg.com/quote/USGG10YR:INDI agree it's a terminology question about what an index is. Thanks.

Hi Djobydjoba,
Good point, that does make sense. I hadn't ever thought of it that way.
To prevent it from ever being exchanged while using currency templates, you have a couple options:
1) Use one of the spots in 2-24, and assign it a fixed rate of 1 to 1 for all your templates 2) Assign these indices to the default currency position.
Number 2 is easiest...
